Bob Marley o Rober Nesta Marley nació el 6 de febrero de 1945 en la pequeña villa de Nine Miles, en St. Ann's Parrish, Jamaica. Era hijo de un marino inglés blanco llamado Norval Sinclair Marley, y de una nativa jamaiquina negra llamada Cedella "Ciddy" Malcolm, a quien conoció en Rhoden May.

Con sus amigos Bunny y Peter, crean un nuevo grupo, 'The Wailers'. En 1975 Bunny y Peter dejan el grupo para dedicarse a su carrera en solitario. Les sustituyen en el grupo la mujer de Bob, Marcia Griffiths y Judy Mowatt; y el grupo pasó a denominarse 'Bob Marley & The Wailers'.

En 1980 publica 'Uprising', cuyo éxito fue arrollador, propiciando una nueva gira europea que batió todos los records de asistencia. Al finalizar la gira europea, Bob cayó gravemente enfermo de cáncer, causado por una herida que se había hecho unos años antes. El 11 de mayo de 1981 Bob Marley fallecía en un hospital de Miami a los 36 años. Su cuerpo fue trasladado a su ciudad natal, Nine Mile, donde descansa en un mausoleo. A su funeral acudieron el primer ministro y altas personalidades de su país.
