Dire Straits es una banda de rock británica, fundada en 1977 por Mark Knopfler (guitarra y voz), David Knopfler (guitarra), John Illsley (bajo) y Pick Withers (batería), con Ed Bicknell como director.

En 1985 se lanza a la venta Brothers In Arms que fue un gigantesco éxito internacional, del que salieron varios singles, incluyendo el que fue número uno "Money for Nothing". En el álbum participaba también Sting entre otros. La portada de este disco, con una de las guitarras de Mark Knopfler en ella, es una de las más famosas de la historia de la música contemporánea. En este disco se encuentran, además del ya mencionado "Money for Nothing", temas como "So far away", "Walk of Life" o "Brothers in Arms".

En 1995, la banda anunció su disolución. Mark Knopfler se concentraría en proyectos en solitario y bandas sonoras para películas; muchas de ellas, en colaboración con el tecladista de Dire Straits, Guy Fletcher. El bajista John Illsley, el único miembro junto a Mark Knopfler que se había mantenido desde los inicios, pasó a dedicarse por completo a la pintura. Otros antiguos miembros continuaron sus carreras musicales, como David Knopfler o el batería Pick Whiters, que pasó a trabajar en bandas de jazz.
